In a recent article about a wine cabinet project in Laguna Beach, Orange County, we got the opportunity to showcase the custom cooling unit that we built for this beach-side luxury home’s wine cellar. Since then, David got a chance to do a walk-through tour of the project. Here’s a video of the tour and the transcript of the interview he gave.
Wine Cellar Cabinets with Two-Inch Ducting
This is a cellar we did in Laguna Beach here. We had four separate temperature zones. The way we did this because we had such a limited space above to run ducting, we had to run a high pressure two-inch ducting system. If you come over here, you can see the two-inch ducting up in there.
(Oh and it shows up there.)
This one is sucking; it’s called the return. This one is blowing; it’s called your supply.

(So why did you have to have a special system for these wine cabinets.)
There’s no way we could create his dream without doing it this way. The limited space between the floors would not provide us the space for larger ducts, so we had to go with the high pressure system so we could use smaller ducting. If we go in the other room I can show you the system in which we used.
Mechanical Room with Unico Cooling High-Pressure Cooling Unit
(So this is the mechanical room we’re going in now.)
Okay, this is our high tech Unico system that provides our high pressure forced air refrigeration system. You can see we have four supplies and four returns. It keeps each of the cabinets flowing with cold air, temperature controlled.
Over here we have the temperature thermostat on the wall. And that’s set to 55 degrees. And we have a remote sensor that goes into one of the cabinets right here to maintain the temperature.
(So what is so special about this particular system?)
The high pressure
(And it’s got to be high pressure because . . . ?)
See the limited space we have between the floors here? We couldn’t fit big ducting in there.
(Oh I see it’s because you’re putting in smaller ducting like that that you have a higher pressure system.)
We can fit it; we can make it work; we can make it feasible.
