Project for the Motocross Star from California
Arctic Metalworks, the leading manufacturer and provider of commercial grade wine cellar refrigeration systems in SoCal, recently completed a custom wine room project for Motocross star Ryan Villopoto in Corona del Mar, California. The Arctic team completely redesigned Villapoto’s existing residential wine cellar in order to transform the original storage space into a properly functioning climate controlled wine room.
Ryan Villopoto is a 3-time supercross and 5-time motocross champion who currently races for Kawasaki in the AMA Supercross and the AMA Lucas Oil Motorcross series. His ride of choice is a Kawasaki KX450F.
Ryan’s Original Wine Cellar
Ryan’s existing wine cellar was originally constructed by the general contractor of the home. However, improper installation of the vapor barriers and wine cellar refrigeration equipment rendered the storage room useless. The Arctic team found the condensing unit placed in a wall mount in the garage enclosed with dry wall. The confined space caused the compressor to severely overheat.
Compressor overheating is usually caused by poor ventilation. The outdoor unit or condensing unit of a wine cellar refrigeration system needs to be installed in a well-ventilated location, such as outdoors or in a vented mechanical room, so as not to overwhelm the compressor and at the same time prevent damage to the refrigeration equipment.
After conducting a moisture test, it was determined that the vapor barrier was placed on the wrong side of the insulation. A vapor barrier is an important component of wine cellar construction Corona del Mar California, as the material acts as a vapor retarder, preventing moisture from seeping through the walls, ceiling, and concrete floor. The improper installation of vapor barriers during wine cellar construction can promote moisture migration, which leads to mold growth and, ultimately, the damage of wine collectibles.
What the Arctic Metalworks Design and Construction Team Did
In order to create a wine room environment that is conducive for storing and aging wines, Arctic Metalworks had to gut the interior and start wine cellar construction from scratch. They removed all equipment and racking systems, and took down the wall structure and drywall. The Arctic team applied spray poly foam insulation, reapplied the vapor barrier with Italian plaster finish, and reinstalled the racking.
The condensing unit was placed outdoors which allows the refrigeration equipment to stay cool. It was connected to the evaporator unit using a line set, consisting of copper tubing and electrical wiring. The Arctic team drilled a tiny hole through the wall and ran their line set to the yard, where the condenser was located. A large AC style vent was used to hide the cooling system.
For this wine cellar construction Corona del Mar California project, Arctic Metalworks installed a digital temperature control. This feature allows wine collectors to manage temperature settings as well as monitor climate conditions inside the wine storage room.
Arctic Metalworks is considered the refrigeration guru of Southern California. They specialize in wine cellar refrigeration systems and wine cellar construction Corona del Mar California. The company recently expanded their business activity to produce handmade wine racking systems. The Arctic team is committed to providing commercial grade refrigeration equipment and quality wine cellar construction and installation.
