David and his team at Arctic Metalworks Inc. had the opportunity to work on a challenging project in a luxury home remodel in Laguna Beach, California. With limited space to vent the air in and out of four custom wine cabinets, they had to find just the right refrigeration system that would allow them to use extra thin ducting. Find out how HVAC specialists, with decades of experience working with refrigeration and wine cellars, managed a challenging project like this.
Dependable Cooling System for Custom Wine Cabinets in Laguna Beach, California
There are various kinds of storage structures that can provide wines with the ideal climate conditions for aging. Each of these store rooms has a different requirement, and that means that each one should be installed with a different kind of refrigeration system that will meet their specific needs.
Finding the Right Refrigeration System for Wine Storage Structures with Small Spaces
Recently, Arctic Metalworks Inc. had a client who owns custom wine cabinets in a luxurious oceanfront house located in Three Arch Bay Community in Laguna Beach, California. There were four reach-in style cabinets that went from the ceiling to the floor and each one was sealed airtight by a glass door. The storage structure had very limited space to vent air in and out of the cabinets. The challenge for the team of HVAC experts was to find the appropriate kind of wine cooling unit that would allow the technicians to use extra thin ducting.
Installation of the Unico High Static Pressure Forced Air Unit
The most suitable type of cooling unit for the Laguna Beach wine cabinets is a ducted split type system. In this setup, the refrigeration equipment is placed in a separate room. The system is configured in such a way that cool air is ducted from the unit to the cabinets.
The team from Arctic Metalworks Inc. set up a Unico High Static Pressure Forced Air Unit. This piece of equipment uses high static pressure, which means that smaller ducts can be utilized. The chosen cooling system is perfect for a wine storage cabinet with limited space.
The Forced Air Unit has a built-in high static fan that can boost the supply of pressure, so that two-inch ducting can be used. Typically, the minimum duct size for standard FAUs would be six inches. There are no smaller duct sizes than that measurement. But, with the Unico cooling unit’s distinct features, the Arctic Metalworks technicians were able to use two-inch ducting. These ducts were adequately small to reach very tight areas.
The special conduits were made of aluminum flex, instead of a polystyrene type of barrier. Aluminum flex is a tough material that does not easily tear or leak. Using eight pieces of small ducting, the refrigeration equipment was able to cool each of the four Laguna Beach custom wine cabinets efficiently, quietly, and effectively.
